Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1991] John LOOP [Henry(5), Christian(4), Johann Jacob LUPP(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the fifth child of Ensign Henry LOOP and his wife Nelly SHARP was born on February 27, 1771, and was christened in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, New York, August 26, 1771. His family lived in Stillwater, now in Saratoga County, New York, at the time of the second Battle of Saratoga. According to tradition, they were forced to evacuate their farm, and John LOOP, then seven years old, remembered bringing up the rear on the back of an old family horse. He later moved with his parents to Queensbury, Warren County, New York. He married first, by 1793, Mary (Polly) EGGLESTON. She died near 1800. That year John is censused in Washington county, where their two daughters, Mary, who died young, and Hannah, were probably born. He married second, before 1809, Avis FISHER. She was born February 1, 1775, according to the age on her tombstone. Family tradition says her family lived 16 miles from the scene of the Battle of Saratoga, and her mother died the day of this battle for lack of medical attention, the surgeons all being busy at the scene of the battle. It is said that she was brought up by her grandfather, John FISHER. She is, however, listed as the daughter of John FISHER, in his will. Family tradition has it that John Loop met with financial reverses and, about 1809, moved his family to German, Chenango county, NY. He is censused there in 1810. The family story is that for the move they had their belongings in two covered wagons. The first was drawn by horses and in it rode Avis Fisher LOOP and her young child, Polly. The second wagon, hauled by an ox team, was driven by the elder daughter Hannah. After the birth of another daughter in German, the family came on to Freetown, Cortland county, NY. For a time John Loop returned each year to his "former home" to earn money, which was hard to come by in Cortland county then. Daughter Hannah would sometimes be left alone for months to take care of the homestead. One evening the latch string was pulled, and four indians walked in. In sign language they asked for food, which she prepared for them. That night they slept in a circle on the floor of the cabin. They left after breakfast, without harming her. Another time, while her parents were absent in the east some months, Hannah spun and wove the material for a new linsey-woolsey suit for her father, and cut and made the garments. On his return, her father was delighted with the suit and asked what he could give her in return. She asked for some meat which she hadn't had in awhile. So he went to hunt for a deer, wearing the new suit. He shot a large buck, only wounding it. The buck charged him, and he dodged behind a small maple tree, grasping the horns of the buck with each hand, with the tree between them. In the ensuing struggle, which the deer lost, the suit was cut and blood-stained in many places. John Loop's second wife, Avis, died January 13, 1861, probably in Freetown. John Loop died October 1, 1862, in Freetown. The children of John LOOP and Polly EGGLESTON were: 1. Mary LOOP, b. about 1795, probably d. young. 2. Hannah LOOP, b. October 15, 1797, m. (Judge) Walton SWEETLAND. The children of John LOOP and Avis FISHER were: 3. Mary (Polly) LOOP, b. May 6, 1810, m. Samuel CONGER. 4. Avis LOOP, b. in German, Chenango County, NY, m. Mr. WAYLE. + 5. Helene Andrews sent a photo in which can be seen a photo of Nathaniel Harrison Loop and his wife Mary Isabelle. Unfortunately the photo inside the photo is too small for me to reproduce it in this newsletter. Helene says she will send me a better copy later. Helene, please do! 2. Robert Lupp sent a photo of the mildly controversial tombstone of "A Child of Mary Loop" from Barlow's Knoll in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the year, which was what I was questioning, can no longer be made out. He says that it is now known that the cemetery was attached to the County Poorhouse. Bob, I wonder if anyone else transcribed that cemetery earlier. You say all the nearby stones were from the 1870's and 1880's. Were they equally worn and made of the same material? I'm beginning to doubt my speculation that the year might be 1828 instead of 1878, because it seems to me that a poorhouse cemetery would have been unusual in 1828. 3. Again I've included TWO chapters from "The Early Loop Family in America" in this issue. These chapters conclude the initial work on the descendants of Ensign Henry Loop. I will now start concentrating on the descendants of Capt. Peter Loop. Once that is done, I believe there remain only a few scattered lines to write up. I will then start compiling all the chapters together, and begin getting ready for publication. 4. Hank Jones, Jr., has published his new book "More Palatine Families", which contains lots of Loop material. In the last issue I included a flyer about the book. I have since received my copy of the book. It is, of course, excellently done. I have not yet compared the Loop material in the book with what I already have, so I do not know if there is anything new. Hank, sorry I missed seeing you at the NEHGS talk. I was out of town. 5. William H. Loop sent me a draft of an article he has written on the Tennessee Loop's which he has submitted to the Clairborne County (Tennessee) Genealogical Society's quarterly. William, I will look it over when I have time. I trust it is okay if I use new information in it for "The Early Loop Family in America". In fact the third article above contains my addendum to the Ludwig Lupp line, containing new information from your article and from family group sheets from Linda Loop. Please include my complete address at the end of your article, so that anyone reading it can contact me if they so desire. 6. Rob Loop sent another nice packet of research results, some of which appear in the Vital Data section above. He also writes: I checked phone books for the whole area and found two Loop families, Clifford Loop and James (his son) in LeRoy MI (Osceola Co.) Later I called Clifford who is 69 years old. His father was Ray E. Loop. He said his grandfather came from Ontario to Michigan and his name was Edwin Loop. Could this be the Edwin D. Loop born in London, Ont., in 1841, the son of John Loop and Elizabeth Cronkright? ... Clifford's grandfather Edwin is buried in the cemetery south of Ashton, about three miles south of LeRoy on hwy 131. ... Edwin also had sons Jake, Edwin Jr., and Goodman Loop. Clifford's brother Rex Allen Loop was there when I called. He has two sons, Jay and Cliff Jr.. Ray E. Loop was born Oct. 12, 1887 and died Apr 10, 1967. Yes, Rob, that is the same Edwin D. Loop. The attached family group sheet shows what I have. Among others, it shows sons Raymond Elmer Loop and Jacob (presumably Jake) Loop, but no Edwin Jr., or Goodman. Jake had a son Goodman, maybe that's where Clifford got the name. 7. Rob Loop also sent a list of French Canadian LOUP's and LOUPE's and wondered if they could be related. I doubt it. I think the LOUP's of Louisiana are related to them and that both have there origins either completely separate or at least from before the time of Anthony LUPP of Hesse-Nassau. 8. Rob Loop, you sent me an 1871 census extract that shows a Warren Loop in "Oxford township in Bothwell County". There is a Oxford township in Oxford County, and a Bothwell village in Orford township in Kent County, but I can't find a Bothwell County. Were there different counties or county names in 1871? Could you check that for me? Thanks. By the way, Carol Lerner dropped her subscription years ago and I doubt that I have a more recent address for her than you do. The address I have is: Carol Lerner 32 Kimbark Blvd. Toronto, Ontario Canada M5N 2X7 9. Joanne Ellis. Unfortunately, Allen L. Stratton passed away a couple years ago. Thanks for the other information you sent me on Rush Loop. The probate record you sent on William A. Loop appears above in the Vital Data section. Thanks also for the other information on Peter H. Loop's family. 10. Linda Loop. Thanks very much for the information on Adam David Loop. I have taken your data and William H. Loop's data and created and addendum to the January, 1991, Scoop. The addendum appears above as the third article. Let me know if you find any mistakes. 11. Robert and Joanna Ford ask about Ensign Henry. The rank of Ensign was a militia rank in this case, not a naval rank. Henry served in the British colonial militia during the French and Indian War. 12. Jim Fry, if you have copies of those references to Catherine Van Deusens who would be the right age to have married Martin Loop, would you please send them to me? Thanks. 13. Debra Maier asks what large towns are near the area where the Lupp's came from in Germany, so she can try to find the area on her maps. The parish town for the villages was Bad Marienberg, which is frequently the only town of the group that shows up on reasonably detailed maps. Your typical world atlas, however, will not show Bad Marienberg. Bad Marienberg is about due north of Limburg and due east of Bonn. If you look back through the first year or two of the Scoop you will find some maps that show the villages. 14. Debra also asks about the storage of genealogical books and magazines. I don't recommend storing them in the basement unless your basement is very dry. They will get moldy if they are kept in a humid place. Attics are bad also, because of the extremes of hot and cold and humidity that exist there. If your basement has humidity control, however, then it would be a good place, because it probably has a temperature that doesn't fluctuate radically during the year. I don't suppose you ever came across that account book or Orange Spencer, did you? 15. Wardene Roush Weisser, PO Box 26, Bonita, CA 91908, wrote inquiring about Christian Loop and his son John Roush. Wardene, I am sending you a copy of an earlier number of the Scoop which contains the chapter on your Christian Loop. This Christian Loop is not the Christian Loop in the DAR register, or rather, the DAR have confused two Christian Loop's. The Christian Loop who was born in Hillsdale died in New York State in 1799. Two things interest me in your letter. First you list a middle initial for John V. Roush. Where did you find the "V". Second, you say he married Elizabeth Loop. Other than the fact that Elizabeth Rouse is buried next to John Rouse in the cemetery and that Christian Loop lists son John Rouse, do you have any other proof that John Rouse's wife's maiden name was Loop? As you will read in the chapter, I believe John Rouse was an adopted son, possibly the child of his wife by a previous marriage of hers. The Christian Lupp who arrived in Philadelphia in 1751 died in 1763. He is possibly the father of your Christian, but my research in Sussex County, NJ, would indicate that his son Christian or Christopher, continued to live in that county too long for him to have had a son in Westmoreland County, PA, in 1790.
